"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

– Steve Jobs

This project was about a creative exploration of the principles and practices that drive successful publication design, setting on a path to thrive in the ever-evolving world of design.

Aim of the project was to understand :

  • The Basics of Layout Design

  • The Power of Typography

  • Exploring Publication Types

  • Drawing Inspiration from Multiple Disciplines

PRE TASK

The assignment was to look for a magazine spread and then further re-design it in terms of layouts.

Initially I started with looking at various spreads :

These were the following spreads I liked to move forward.

Out of them, I went ahead with :

I went ahead with this spread because I liked the use of various elements like Pull-quote, the text alignments, and the visual appearance of the spread.

REDESIGNED SPREAD

Learnings and Reflections

  • Getting introduced to a new software for this project opened a gateway to a broader range of creative possibilities. Embracing the challenge of mastering unfamiliar tools expanded my skill set.

  • Understanding the rhythm and flow of content on a spread became key to conveying a compelling narrative.

  • Studying the original magazine spread provided valuable insights. Recognizing what worked well and understanding the existing design principles laid the foundation for informed and intentional redesign decisions.

RECONSTRUCT THE NEWS

The objective of this assignment was to understand design principles like composition and balance.

The task was to achieve this by reorganising the content from selected newspaper and magazine pages to create a new layout. The task was to craft a design that demonstrates a thoughtful understanding of design elements and principles while exploring space and form as creatively as you can.

I wanted to create a design that exemplifies a thoughtful use of spaces and visual weight, effectively conveying the intended message and I somewhere feel that I did justice to the assignment. But, obviously, I would like to work more on this assignment and maybe try more attempts so that I can achieve neater layouts.

FEEDBACK :

  • The interleaf part is interesting but I could work on the layouts.

  • There should have been enough breathing space so that I could have divided my newspaper into different rows and columns

After the feedback, I felt that maybe I took a lil artistic direction towards this assignment but the main purpose was to create something that is neat and is well structured that further qualifies for a good layout.

TOPIC FOR THE MAGAZINE - AUTOMOBILES

Zine Research

Topic - Green Mobility

ZINE

A zine is more than just a publication; it's a grassroots movement encapsulated on paper. Typically produced in small print runs, these DIY creations span a diverse array of topics, from personal narratives and poetry to art, photography, and niche interests.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

The approach that I took, to understand the look and feel of the magazine was to look at a lot of automobile magazines.

PRIMARY VISUAL BOARD

After looking at a lot of magazines, we finally came up with some keywords and tone of voice for our magazine:

MATRIX

Rough Matrix- The step where we as a group decided about all spreads and then further decided who'll do what!

In publication design, the matrix serves as the invisible backbone, strategically aligning elements to create visually harmonious layouts.

VISUAL RESEARCH BOARD

As a group, we decided to make a pinterest board where we all dumped in inspirations for our respective spreads :

LEARNINGS AND REFLECTIONS
  • Publication Design was me was all about storytelling but through layouts. The intricacies the process involve is something that lkept me hooked to it.

  • It was my very first experience of working in a group where I was not familiar with everyone, this project taught me alot about the group dynamics, allocation of responsibilities, and also things like budgetting.

  • It really helped me explore a topic which I wasn't least interested and was completely out of my comfort zone.

  • In the initial stages, I learned to appreciate the beauty of revisions. What may start as a concept on paper undergoes a transformation through each iteration, refining itself until it reaches a point of visual and communicative excellence.

  • Feedback became my compass. Welcoming critiques and insights from peers and mentors transformed my designs from mere ideas to resilient creations.

"To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master."

- Milton Glaser
